Sept of the twenty largest arms manufacturers in the world are now Chinese, compared to three in 2019, according to a study published Monday, December 5 by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri). “There has been a wave of consolidation in the Chinese arms industry since the mid-2010s,” said Xiao Liang, a researcher at Sipri. “In 2021, the Chinese company CSSC [China State Shipbuilding Corporation] became the largest military shipbuilder in the world after a merger between two existing companies and arms sales amounting to $11.1 billion,” he adds.
