Armed Group on Divvy Bikes Targeting Victims in Chicago’s Loop

CHICAGO (WLS) — Chicago police are on the lookout for a group of two to four individuals who have been terrorizing victims in the city, stealing their belongings while riding Divvy bikes.

In a string of attacks over the past few days, the group has targeted multiple people in the early morning hours, mostly in Chicago’s Loop. The series of crimes has left residents and workers concerned for their safety.

“I just think it’s nuts, like, the whole idea. They just get on these bikes and go away,” said Felicia Davis, who works downtown.

Despite the risks, the perpetrators have been choosing Divvy bikes as their getaway vehicles. “I’m surprised they’re using the Divvy bikes because I feel like that’s pretty easily tracked,” said Brandon Wong.

The first robbery occurred on June 19 on the 100 block of South State Street at approximately 2:30 a.m. Since then, there have been over a dozen attacks, with six occurring on June 25 at various locations and times, such as the 400 block of South LaSalle Street at 1:50 a.m., the 0-100 block of North Michigan Avenue at 2:04 a.m., and the 0-100 block of West Congress Parkway at 2:16 a.m.

The next day, the group struck again, committing six more robberies in different locations, including the 600 block of South Plymouth Center, 600 block of South State Street, and the 0-100 block of South Michigan Avenue.

Most recently, on Friday morning, two more robberies took place. One occurred on the 100 block of North State Street at 1:05 a.m., and another on the 0-100 block of West Washington Street at 1:45 a.m.

The suspects, believed to be between 15 and 25 years old, have been described as wearing dark hooded sweatshirts, dark jeans, and black ski masks. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any information that could lead to their capture.

“I think, as a single woman, it’s definitely scary, especially if I have a late night at the office and I have to walk back. I’m by myself, like, already kind of nervous, but just knowing that is happening is just one more step of, like, ‘Oh, my goodness.’ Like, you have to be really, really careful,” said Davis.

If approached by this group, police advise remaining calm and trying to remember any physical characteristics such as tattoos or scars. However, it is crucial not to chase after them.

Authorities have also reminded the public to utilize the Interactive Safety Tracker to stay informed about crime and safety in their neighborhoods.

“Ideally, we hope they stop their criminal activities. If they are listening, I urge them to reconsider. There are better ways to make money,” Wong added.

Chicago police are working diligently to apprehend the group and ensure the safety of residents and visitors in the area.
