Passengers waiting at a train station in south-west Nigeria were attacked on Saturday evening – around 100 kilometers from Benin City. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the robbery.

BAccording to the authorities, several people were injured and some kidnapped in an armed attack on a train station in Nigeria. The attack happened at the train station in Igueben in southwestern Nigeria, around 100 kilometers from Benin City, the Ministry of Transport announced on Sunday. A museum for returned Benin bronzes is also being built there with German funds.

Men armed with Kalashnikovs attacked travelers waiting on Saturday night, according to police in Edo state. The police are looking for the perpetrators and the kidnappers. Further details were not available. Up to 30 travelers were kidnapped in the Nigerian media.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. In March 2022, Boko Haram terrorists shot dead eight people and kidnapped a number of others in a raid on a train station near the capital Abuja. Train traffic on the affected line was then interrupted for eight months.

Nigeria has taken out billions in loans from China to modernize the rail system in the country of 206 million people and make it attractive as a safe alternative to accident-prone road traffic.
