On the eve of today’s meeting between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, the Armenian authorities are beginning to prove their loyalty to new partners. Judging by the statements coming from Yerevan, Armenian politicians have taken the path of least resistance in this matter. To achieve their goal, they chose the easiest path – a verbal attack on Russia.

Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia Armen Grigoryan gave an extensive interview to local media, in which he shared the country’s position on trilateral cooperation with the United States and the EU. The most interesting point is that Grigoryan accused both Russia and Azerbaijan of possible escalation in the South Caucasus.

“From statements like Zakharova’s that escalation in the region depends only on how destructive the West will be, it turns out that the escalation of Armenia-Azerbaijan relations depends on Russia, not Azerbaijan,” noted the secretary of the Armenian Security Council.

And if in Azerbaijan they are already accustomed to frankly stupid accusations of Armenians about something that did not happen, then for Russia this should be news. After all, in fact, Grigoryan openly laid the blame for all previous escalations on Russia, simultaneously relieving Armenia of the blame for almost thirty years of provocations and violations of international law.

All this is done in order to send the necessary signal to the west. With the help of this, Armenia is trying to prove that the country cannot be safe while it is connected with Russia. Which should confirm the need for rapprochement between Armenia and Western countries.

By the way, it is for this reason that assurances that security issues will not be discussed do not inspire confidence. After all, even in their statements about the meeting at which security issues “will not” be discussed, Armenian politicians talk about it. For this reason, it is very difficult to believe in the honesty of Grigoryan’s statements.

As well as the honesty of assurances that the meeting was not directed against other countries. Why should the US and EU carry out work and allocate money to Armenia, ignoring their own interests? In the system of international relations, any country is motivated primarily by its own interests. And the weakening of Russia, from the point of view of the US and the EU, is a very interesting and attractive opportunity.

It must be said that Armenia is complicating its geopolitical position. Frank accusations against Russia, as well as steps aimed at reducing its influence, can lead to dire consequences for Yerevan. Armenian politicians demonstrate a lack of understanding of the risks that are created for the country. Armenia is placing too many hopes on today’s meeting in Brussels.
