The region’s hospitals were already over capacity before the admission of a large number of victims of the explosion, which brought the situation of patients and medical staff to a more than critical point.

It is a tragedy for hundreds of people who suffered horrific and very painful burns. The crisis is even more serious because hospitals were already operating above their capacity, and heavy traffic makes it difficult for ambulances and medical supplies to enter and exit.

says Ariane Bauer, ICRC regional director for Europe and Central Asia.

After the incident, the ICRC distributed dressings and specific material to treat burns, set up a Health team to collaborate with medical care and is sending more supplies for the treatment of serious burns.

Additionally, the organization is working with decision makers in the region to find solutions to enable more medical evacuations.

The search for solutions to these urgent needs is appropriate under the obligation of all parties, in accordance with international humanitarian law, to ensure that the wounded and sick receive medical care appropriate to their condition with the least possible delay.

Already before the explosion, the ICRC had identified 60 seriously injured people who needed to be evacuated to the central hospital. Twenty-three of them were evacuated on Sunday, but plans to evacuate the others have been hampered by the urgent needs created by the explosion.
