MADRID, 26 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The exodus of civilians from Nagorno Karabakh to Armenia continues to grow and this Tuesday there were at least 19,000 displaced people, according to official data on which the UN has also focused, which has urged measures to guarantee the Human Rights of this population.

The Armenian Deputy Prime Minister, Tigrán Khachatrián, updated the figures this Friday, which local authorities are trying to deal with against the clock. The Government, which has set up registration points on the border, has provided accommodation to more than 2,500 people.

“It is the third day that citizens have to leave Nagorno Karabakh. It is necessary to discover what the priority needs of these people are, house them and resolve the most urgent issues working 24 hours a day,” he explained, according to a statement from the Executive. .

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has been “deeply concerned” about this exodus of civilians, since the number has tripled in just one day and, at the border, vehicles are piling up waiting for reach Armenian territory. These are vulnerable people – “mainly the elderly, women and children” – who require “urgent” assistance.

The agency has announced that it will increase its humanitarian assistance to these displaced people, emphasizing that the lack of accommodation and low temperatures require rapid intervention to provide shelter. It has also called for providing psychosocial support to these people.

The head of UNHCR, Filippo Grandi, has highlighted that there are already teams on the ground “trying to provide immediate assistance.” “We have to ensure that civilians are protected and help can reach those who need it,” he added, lamenting the resurgence of a conflict that dates back several decades.

The international agency has urged all parties to avoid actions that could further increase this exodus, taking into account that “no one should be forced to flee their home.”

RESPECT FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has also expressed his “concern” about the “fragile” humanitarian situation, calling for the protection of all civilians to be marked as an “absolute priority.”

In this sense, he has asked in a statement that the rights of the ethnic Armenian population be respected and, in particular, those who have traveled to Armenia, so that they receive assistance and can return at some point “in safety and dignity” if they want it that way.

“Any possible violation of Human Rights or International Humanitarian Law requires follow-up, which includes rapid, independent and transparent investigations that guarantee accountability,” Turk urged.
