Fourteen cases of violence against journalists were recorded in the second quarter of this year. In total, 23 journalists and cameramen were injured. This was reported at a press conference on Thursday by the Chairman of the Committee for the Protection of Freedom of Speech Ashot Melikyan, Day.Az reports with reference to Armenian media.

“As for cases of violence, their number in the post-revolutionary years is unprecedented,” he noted.

Melikyan noted that there were no cases of violence against journalists and cameramen recorded in the first quarter. And 11 out of 14 cases took place during the protests of the Tavush for the Motherland movement.

This also concerns the facts of pressure on the media. According to Melikyan, there were 17 such cases at the beginning of the year, and 26 in the second quarter.

The expert added that such a number of cases of pressure on the media was noted only in 2018. He believes that there is every reason to sound the alarm, since there are both abuses of official powers and a lack of professionalism.

“The government should be concerned about such figures, because they could seriously affect the country’s image,” he said.
