The general also emphasized that the Army’s concept of work is based on Constitution. “The bigger question is this. If we are non-partisan, it means that the population can rest assured, they have to have confidence. Today, we have a mantra, our democracy has been preserved. She has crossed an obstacle. What we have to remove from people’s imagination is a perception of threat. This perception of threat cannot exist, because our conception of work is a complete subjection to constitutional dictates. I think this is very pacified within the imaginary of the force itself.”
Ribeiro Paiva assumed command of the Army after the invasions and attacks on Praça dos Três Poderes. The general was asked about research by the Ipec Institute, which indicated that Brazilians’ confidence in Armed forces dropped from 67% to 66%, from 2022 to 2023. “We know that the end of the year was troubled, with a lot of media exposure. This proves that the values are perceived by the population and the performance of the force is respected”, she declared. The Army commander also highlighted the importance of work on the borders, asked for the conclusion of the Integrated Border Monitoring System (SISFRON) and defended the purchase of new helicopters, because 12 of the 94 Army aircraft will have to be retired in 2024.
