Arrangements for Heroes’ Day commemoration in Jaffna? Order issued by the Court

Police have obtained court injunctions in Mullaitivu and Vavuniya districts for the commemoration of Heroes’ Day, while a ban has been imposed in Jaffna as well.

The ban was issued by the Kopay and Jaffna police stations. The Jaffna Magistrate’s Court has allowed an application filed by the police seeking a ban on the Heroes’ Day event in Jaffna.

The petitions were filed in the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court today on behalf of the Kopay and Jaffna Police Station Officers.

According to the petition, arrangements are being made for the Maveerar Tomorrow to be held in front of the Army’s 512 Brigade Headquarters at the location of the Maveerar Tuilum home in Kopay and at the Jaffna University premises and within the boundaries of the Jaffna Police Station.

Police have demanded that Section 120 of the Penal Code be prohibited under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and that it is a crime to conduct such an event.

The petition was taken up for hearing before Jaffna Magistrate VR Sivalingam today.

It has been ordered to ban the holding of commemorations for one week from the 21st of tomorrow till the 28th of next month.
