Father and son arrested in connection with Nellai quarry accident have been jailed.

Six people were trapped in a rock fall on the 14th at a stone quarry in the Adimithippankulam area near Nellai. Murugan and Vijay were rescued alive and are receiving treatment at the Palayankottai Government Hospital.

Selvam, another Murugan, Selvakumar were killed. Their bodies were recovered.

Father-son arrested

Munneerpallam police have registered a case in connection with the Calcutta accident and have already arrested and jailed Sankaranarayanan, the owner who leased the Calcutta, and Jebastin, the manager. Chamber Selvaraj, the owner of the quarry and a Congress leader and former chairman of the Thisayanvilai town panchayat, and his son Kumar were on the lookout.

In this context, the personal police including Munneerpallam Police Inspector Thillai Nagarajan and Sub-Inspector Sivakumar arrested Chamber Selvaraj and his son Kumar yesterday while staying at a private hotel in Mangalore, Karnataka.

Police investigation

They were later taken to Munneerpallam police station yesterday. There the police interrogated them.

They were then taken to the house of the 5th Judicial Magistrate (Responsible) Triveni on Monday and produced before him. Magistrate Triveni ordered the police to conduct a medical examination of them and bring them with the report.

Imprisonment

Chamber Selvaraj and Kumar were produced before the magistrate again by the police after a medical examination. The magistrate ordered them detained for 15 days.

They were subsequently taken away with heavy police security and imprisoned at Palayankottai.
