The Civil Status Department in Benghazi reported the arrest of a person impersonating a deceased citizen and tampering with civil registry procedures.

The administration said that the crime was committed by a person born in Minya who obtained Libyan citizenship in 2001. His son died in 2014 in the city of Ajdabiya after being involved in a traffic accident. He did not complete the death procedures for his son and notify the civil registry of the death. He agreed with an Egyptian person to impersonate his deceased son.

The administration added that the Egyptian obtained the national number of the deceased son and moved to the city of Misurata in 2015 to reside there. He obtained a passport, a personal ID card, and a driver’s license, and got married with a forged passport contract. He was given a family registration number, as if he were the deceased and still alive and living a normal life.

The administration explained that an arrest warrant was issued by the Public Prosecution, after which the impersonator confessed to what was attributed to him and stated that he obtained the national number from the father of the deceased. He was detained pending investigation on charges of forgery of official documents and impersonation, and ordered the arrest and bringing of others who helped the accused, as the case is still under investigation.
