Lubumbashi, August 24, 2023. The Human Rights Research Institute (IRDH) welcomes the assignment to Military Justice of Major General Smith Gihanga Mutara, Commander of the 22nd Military Region of Lubumbashi. In order to ensure his defence, that he be granted immediate access to his lawyers and that an impartial trial shed light on the role of everyone involved.

Indeed, with regard to the theft of 120 tons of copper cathodes belonging to the mining company Tenke Fungurume Mining (TFM), on June 30, 2023, the IRDH continues to request investigations into recurring and scandalous thefts of copper ores in the provinces of Haut-Katanga and Lualaba.

This is an opportunity to congratulate the action of the command of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) and to recall that the Attorney General at the Court of Cassation had signed, on July 11, a warrant of bring against the provincial minister Eric Muta. The latter had reacted to it by revealing to RFI, on August 1, that the thefts of the brass have a direct link with the insecurity in the province of Haut-Katanga.

LET JUSTICE BE DONE.
