The Moroccan authorities have arrested an alleged member of the Islamic State jihadist group who was preparing a “serious attack on public order”, as reported by the Central Office of Judicial Investigations (OCIJ) of the African country.

The agency has indicated that the suspect was arrested in Safi (west) following information from the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) about the existence of a plan on the part of the detainee to perpetrate an attack.

The statement was published after the arrest on Wednesday of three presumed members of the jihadist group for their role in the death of a police officer as part of a plan to “seriously threaten public order.”

The detainees would have sworn allegiance to the Islamic State and participated in the murder of an agent to get hold of his weapon with the aim of assaulting a bank to commit a robbery. The attackers would have mutilated the agent after his murder and later set fire to his body and his vehicle to try to hide the evidence of the crime.
