MADRID, 19 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Tunisian authorities have arrested the former president of the opposition movement Ennahda, Sadiq Choro, who was already imprisoned for 20 years during the term of the late Tunisian former president Zine el Abidine ben Ali.

Through a statement that the Mosaique radio station has accessed, the party has announced that members of a security unit specializing in the fight against terrorism arrested him on Thursday afternoon.

According to preliminary information, the arrest would have taken place within the framework of an operation to combat terrorism. The detainee assumed the leadership of the party in the 1990s, and after spending 20 years in prison returned to politics when he was elected as Ennahda’s representative in the Constituent Assembly, although he retired for health reasons almost a decade ago.

Earlier this week, Tunisia sentenced the leader of the main opposition party, Rachid Ghanuchi, to one year in prison, following an investigation by the anti-terror unit.

In addition to Ghanuchi, the Tunisian authorities arrested three other senior officials from Ennahda — Belgacem Hasén, Mohamed Cheniba and Mohamed Gumani — all of whom are also being investigated for alleged “plots against state security.” The authorities have also closed the headquarters of Ennahda and the National Salvation Front opposition coalition and have prohibited meetings of their members.
