In Russia, the former deputy chief of logistics of the 144th motorized rifle division, Dmitry Peshkov, was arrested. The reason has not been disclosed, but Western analysts suggest that it may be connected with the failures of Russian troops at the front.
This was reported by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
On August 2, Russian authorities arrested Colonel Dmitry Peshkov on charges of stealing food rations intended for Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine. The serviceman himself does not admit guilt.
Western analysts note that Peshkov’s arrest is only part of the Kremlin’s strategy to remove officials from the Russian Defense Ministry. One option is an attempt to punish the command for failures at the front, and the second is an attempt to retain only officers loyal to the authorities and the Kremlin’s actions in the department.
As specified in the document, units of the 144th Motorized Rifle Division participated in offensive operations in the Terny-Nevskoye area of the Luhansk region and recently lost part of the territory due to counterattacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This could have been the reason for Peshkov’s arrest on trumped-up charges of stealing rations.
Russia lost 200 units of equipment in one day
It is worth noting that losses at the front may be a more likely reason for arrests in the Russian Defense Ministry, since the Kremlin has already eliminated disloyal officials in the third year of a full-scale war with Ukraine. The remaining “resistance” forces are most likely inactive, as they fear for their lives.
But losses at the front continue and increase, especially since the beginning of the offensive in eastern Ukraine. Thus, over the past 24 hours, according to data from the Ukrainian General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the losses of Russian troops amounted to 1,170 people and more than 200 units of military equipment. Including 4 tanks, 27 combat armored vehicles, 56 artillery systems and 57 drones were lost.
Due to the monstrous losses of equipment and personnel, Russia has begun to seek help from its “allies.” One of the most zealous is North Korea, which has supplied Russia with certain types of weapons. According to media reports, missile systems from the DPRK have already begun to be used at the front.
