Gas inflows into Spain using ships are setting record levels. In March, arrivals by ship at the regasification plants lifted the weight to a historic 79% of total gas imports, compared to only 21% that entered by pipeline, according to the latest official data from Enagás. Traditionally, and until the closure of the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline decided by Algeria, the distribution of imports between the pipe and the ship was practically equal.

In March, the six Spanish regasification plants unloaded a total of 35 methane vessels, the largest record in the entire historical series of Enagás statistics, which began in 2013. The vessels injected into the plants a total of 29,940 gigawatt-hours of LNG equivalent, the second largest volume of energy discharged in history, behind only April 2022, which saw an exceptional peak after the start of the war. During the first quarter, the terminals of the regasification plants received natural gas from 13 different sources.
