Leandro Trossard and Martin Odegaard scored a goal each to lead Arsenal to a 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers to regain the top spot in the English Premier League on Saturday.
Arsenal’s tally rose to 74 points, one point ahead of Manchester City, second in the standings, which has a postponed match remaining after a 1-0 win over Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday. Liverpool ranks third with 71 points and has played one match less than Arsenal.
An early attempt from Kai Havertz in the first minute raised the expectations of Arsenal fans in the match, but the two teams faced difficulties in creating real scoring opportunities.
The most dangerous scoring opportunity went to Wolverhampton midfielder Joao Gomez, who started from the right side and fired a powerful shot that was blocked by goalkeeper David Raya half an hour into the match.
Trossard opened the scoring before the end of a modest first half when Wolverhampton defender Santiago Bueno put the ball in his way in an attempt to cut off the ball from Gabriel Jesus, and the Belgian player put it into the net with a powerful right shot.
Trossard said, after scoring his ninth goal in the league this season, which is his best record in English football, “I tried to put it in the goal and it came in a very wonderful way.” I’m glad it went in. “We really needed the goal.” Arsenal, who were eliminated from the Champions League in the quarter-finals by Bayern Munich, improved in the second half and dominated the match. Bukayo Saka had a chance to add the second goal in stoppage time, but his shot went over the crossbar.
Arsenal doubled their lead in the fifth minute of stoppage time with a goal scored by Odegaard from a tight angle, taking advantage of a pass from Declan Rice.
Arsenal captain Odegaard, who lost to Aston Villa in his previous league match, told Sky Sports: “A big win for us. It was a difficult week for us.” I think we achieved some difficult results and the situation is difficult emotionally, but we have to move forward.
“Today was about rising up and getting the win and it was, so I’m happy.”
