Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal were much better when they beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-0

With a hat-trick from Karim Adeyemi, Borussia Dortmund had a goal feast against Celtic on Tuesday. After that, Barcelona and Manchester City scored their first wins in the new Champions League format.

Adeyemi scored his hat-trick in the first half as Dortmund beat Celtic 7-1 at home.

Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring in the eighth minute and converted a penalty in the second half as Barça beat visiting Swiss Youth 5-0.

New captain Raphinha and defender Iñigo Martínez also scored in the first half, with a fifth own goal from Mohamed Camara

İlkay Gündoğan, who played for the Catalans last season, scored the first goal in City’s 4-0 win at the home of Slovak club Slovakia Bratislava. Erling Haaland scored his 42nd goal in his 41st Champions League game.

City had just drawn 0-0 against Inter Milan on the opening day, while Barça conceded 2-1 against Monaco – the first defeat of their new coach Hansi Flick’s tenure.

In London, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal were much better as Luis Enrique beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-0. Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka scored in the first half for the Gunners.

Arteta was a PSG player, an 18-month loan from Barcelona.

Also on Tuesday, Inter eliminated Red Star Belgrade 4-0 and German champions Bayer Leverkusen beat AC Milan 1-0.

Argentinian Lautaro Martínez scored Inter’s third goal at the San Siro.

A late goal from Daniel Bragança saw Sporting Lisbon draw 1-1 at PSV Eindhoven.

The Champions League changed its layout for this edition, adding four teams. The 36 teams take part in a single league competition and are all placed within one table, playing eight games against eight different opponents.

The first games

Stade Brest did not compete in the Champions League until this edition.

Local French club Salzburg won 4-0 for their second win in as many games in Europe’s top competition.

Senegalese attacker Abdallah Sima scored a double and reached three goals in two games. He also scored in Brest’s final 2-1 win against Austrian champions Sturm Graz.

Mahdi Camara and Mathias Pereira Lage scored the other goals.

Salzburg conceded seven goals in their first two games. They had just lost 3-0 in the final to Sparta Prague.

A free-kick from Finnish midfielder Kaan Kairinen earned Sparta Prague a 1-1 draw at Stuttgart in the other early game on Tuesday.

Enzo Millot put the German club ahead with a header in the seventh minute and Kairinen equalized in the 32nd minute.

Stuttgart got their first game in the Champions League since a 1-1 draw against Barcelona in February 2010, when Zlatan Ibrahimović scored for the visitors.
