Politicians in Saxony have been attacked several times. Now it has been the turn of AfD member Hentschel. Unknown assailants carried out an arson attack on two cars.
The Saxony State Criminal Police Office (LKA) is investigating an arson attack on two cars belonging to AfD state parliament member Holger Hentschel. According to the AfD parliamentary group, one car was completely destroyed and the other damaged. According to the LKA, investigations are being carried out “in all directions”. They hope to find witnesses to the crime. The arson attack was carried out on Thursday night.
The AfD suspects left-wing extremists as the perpetrators. The attack was temporally linked to the protests against the asylum seekers’ home in Leipzig-Thekla, the faction stressed. Hentschel is committed to ensuring that no further asylum seekers’ home is built in Thekla, but rather – as originally planned – a senior citizens’ home. In 2016, there were already two arson attacks on Hentschel’s vehicles.
Fraction and party leader Jörg Urban condemned the act. “As is well known, this arson attack is not the first and not the second on representatives of the AfD. It is another indication of who is really endangering democracy.” Political debate must be conducted with arguments. “Violence is never acceptable. There must be cross-party consensus on this. The AfD stands for peaceful discourse without any ifs or buts.”
Last night, unknown persons also set fire to the van of a former AfD MP in Bremen. State security is investigating and is looking into a politically motivated background, the police announced. No one was injured.
