Art and Science merge in the ‘Nanocosmos’ exhibition, in the Plaza de la Nogalera, from June 30 to July 21. This is the second stop, after the presentation at the CosmoCaixa Science Museum in Barcelona, of the traveling exhibition Nanocosmos. ‘Reality hidden from the human eye’, produced by the La Caixa Foundation. The exhibition presents 36 photographs taken with an electron microscope, by the artist Michael Benson, with which he offers us a different look at the flora and fauna that delves into its smallest scale.

“The important thing is that in this street exhibition, art and science clash with people. You don’t have to go into a museum or pay a ticket to enjoy it”, highlighted the Councilor for Culture, José Manuel Ruiz Rivas.

Art, high technology and science come together in this new exhibition, which is a journey through the natural world on a submillimetre scale. The author has used a scanning electron microscope from the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa and has managed to reverse the uses of this technology, which until now had been at the service of science. Benson now uses it to create art in painstakingly processed and assembled black and white digital images that portray the complexity of flora and fauna.

In the images you can see, for example, the structures of diatoms, you can get up close to radiolarians, small insects such as aphids or the hairy appendages of butterflies. The councilor highlighted the “astonishing nature of the subject, of seeing insignificant things that, when enlarged, do not cease to amaze us.”

To go deeper, guided tours with an educator will also be offered, which will allow a dialogue to be established with the participants and resolve any doubts that may arise. “Bringing groups and the public together to take a guided tour is wonderful. It is an exhibition that will not go unnoticed due to the place where it will be located and due to the very background of the theme”, commented the mayor.

This exhibition is the second collaboration of the La Caixa Foundation with the North American writer, artist and filmmaker. This construction between architecture, botany, biology and avant-garde art, after passing through Barcelona, toured cities in Spain and Portugal.

The exhibition is part of the Art in the Street program, with which the La Caixa Foundation wants to make different cities an open-air museum. Through these exhibitions, the entity aims to bring culture and science closer to all kinds of audiences.
