Art as Medicine: Holyoke Art Joins Innovative ‘Art Pharmacy’ Program to Boost Mental Wellness
A novel approach to mental healthcare is expanding in Massachusetts, with Holyoke Art officially joining the Art Pharmacy initiative. This groundbreaking program allows healthcare professionals to “prescribe” creative experiences to patients struggling with a range of emotional and mental health challenges, offering a non-clinical pathway to healing and well-being.
The Art Pharmacy model, initially launched in Georgia in 2022, is now scaling across the state through a collaboration between the Massachusetts Cultural Council and Mass General Brigham. The program recognizes the powerful connection between creative expression and mental health, providing a unique alternative or complement to traditional therapies.
Expanding Access to Creative Wellness
As a new regional provider, Holyoke Art will offer a variety of expressive sessions to referred patients at no cost. These experiences include the highly anticipated Splatery, where participants can engage in unrestrained paint flinging, and guided art classes designed to foster connection and confidence.
“There’s something deeply healing about giving people permission to make a mess,” said Kathy McKean, executive director of Holyoke Art. “We’ve seen how messy play reduces stress, lowers inhibitions, and builds community. Through Art Pharmacy, we’re reaching people who may never have walked into an art space, but who need it most.”
How the ‘Prescription’ Works
The Art Pharmacy program enables healthcare providers to prescribe up to 12 creative experiences annually to patients experiencing anxiety, depression, loneliness, or chronic stress. Participants are then supported by a care navigator who personalizes their experiences and monitors their progress using established tools like the PHQ-9 and WHO Well-being Index.
This structured approach ensures that the creative experiences are integrated into a broader care plan and that outcomes are measurable. The program emphasizes accessibility and consistency, removing financial barriers to participation.
The Science Behind the Splatter
Recent research highlighted by Holyoke Art demonstrates the significant psychological benefits of messy play. Sensory engagement and unstructured creativity can improve cognitive function, reduce anxiety, and activate crucial brain pathways associated with healing. The Splatery, in particular, facilitates what researchers term ‘bottom-up processing,’ restoring emotional balance by engaging the body before the intellect.
“Art has always been a tool for survival,” McKean stated. “This partnership makes it a formal part of the care plan.”
Getting Involved
Patients are referred to the program by their healthcare provider, social worker, or mental health counselor. Holyoke Art will begin hosting referred sessions this summer.
