On Monday 31 July, a celebratory edition of Cairo Editore’s monthly: on the cover, Yayoi Kusama. Director Michele Bonuomo: «A record that makes us proud»
The choice of Yayoi Kusama (by now an icon rather than a «simple» artist) for the cover of the new issue of «Arte» (a special issue on newsstands from Monday 31 July), the monthly Cairo Editore directed by Michele Bonuomo, who will celebrate the 600 issues of the magazine (founded in 1970). One of the most iconic exhibitions of 2023 is dedicated to the Japanese artist (1929), the one curated by Doryun Chong, Mika Yoshitake and Lucía Agirre at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, which until August 8 traces his career through a selection of two between paintings, sculptures, performances, installations and archival material. While over 20,000 tickets have already been booked for the exhibition that will bring Fireflies on the Water to the Palazzo della Ragione in Bergamo (from 17 November to 14 January), one of Kusama’s best-known Infinity Mirror Rooms, on loan from the Whitney Museum of American Art of New York.
«Six hundred issues that, month after month and never a break, have accompanied readers for over 52 years – explains the director Michele Bonuomo -. A primacy that makes us proud to have been witnesses and protagonists of one of the most prolific seasons for Italian and international art». To celebrate this milestone, issue 600 will also feature other special moments: such as the largest retrospective exhibition ever organized for Mario Nigro (in Milan, at Palazzo Reale until 17 September and at the Museo del Novecento until 5 November).
Or like Domus Contemporanea (until 26 November) which, on the occasion of the return to the city of Trento of the remains of the Roman Villa of Orpheus (a house built between the 1st and 2nd century AD) transformed the Civic Gallery of Trento into a contemporary «domus». Thanks to eighty works by twenty-nine artists, from the end of the 19th century to the latest generations, brought together for the occasion “to outline the relationship between modern art and the classical age, neoclassicism, archeology”.
According to tradition “Arte” will not celebrate the anniversary only “with blows” of exhibitions. Issue 600 will also include an investigation into the new frontiers of digital technologies and the implications of the new tools available to artists, from augmented reality to artificial intelligence and the metaverse. Because, concludes Bonuomo, “the story of these first six hundred issues is the same one that we will continue to tell with enthusiasm, the same one that we will continue to share with readers”.
