British Qualifier Fery Stuns Cobolli at Australian Open
Arthur Fery, a qualifier from Great Britain, delivered the first upset of the Australian Open, defeating Italy’s Flavio Cobolli in straight sets.
- World No. 185 Arthur Fery secured a 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, 6-1 victory over the 20th-seeded Cobolli.
- Fery, 23, was making his main draw debut at an overseas Grand Slam event.
- Cobolli faced visible physical struggles throughout the match, including a stomach issue.
- This marks Fery’s second notable Grand Slam scalp, having previously defeated Alexei Popyrin at Wimbledon.
The Australian Open witnessed a surprising start as British qualifier Arthur Fery ousted Italian 20th seed Flavio Cobolli, marking the tournament’s first major shock. The 23-year-old Fery, ranked 185th in the world, dominated the court at a sun-soaked Melbourne Park, achieving a decisive 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, 6-1 win.
A Rising Star Makes His Mark
This victory equals the biggest win of Fery’s career, building on his impressive performance at Wimbledon last year where he defeated 20th seed Alexei Popyrin. Making his main draw debut at a Grand Slam tournament outside of the United Kingdom, Fery appeared unfazed by the occasion, displaying a confident and aggressive playing style.
Cobolli, a Wimbledon quarter-finalist, appeared to be battling a physical ailment from the outset. He was seen leaving the court at the end of the first set for a bathroom break, visibly struggling with a stomach issue. Upon his return, Cobolli consumed electrolyte tablets provided by the tournament doctor, and later requested medical attention again while trailing 3-0 in the third set.
What makes Fery’s win particularly impressive? He’s a qualifier, meaning he had to win multiple matches just to get into the main draw of the tournament, then upset a seeded player.
Despite Cobolli’s difficulties, Fery deserves significant credit for his focused approach and skillful execution. “It seems I like drawing 20th seeds at Grand Slams,” Fery quipped after the match, showcasing his lighthearted attitude. He also expressed his enjoyment of playing on large, prominent courts, stating, “I love playing on big courts and big stages.”
