On July 17, 1981 a small film with a large cast was released in American cinemas destined to an unexpected and extraordinary success but also to an almost instantaneous archiving despite an attempt at a late sequel and a totally null remake released thirty years later: it is «Arturo (“Arthur”), director Steve Gordon’s first (and only) feature, starring Dudley Moore, Liza Minnelli and John Gielgud. A brilliant and programmatically “predictable” sentimental comedy, where every narrative and emotional junction is exactly what the public foreshadows and to some extent “desires”: a machine-cinema of the past, which directly links all its nature to that of great bittersweet proofs of Hollywood in the golden age with the presence of the immense British actor John Gielgud, belatedly consecrated with his only Academy Award, to act as the ideal trait d’union between two eras. A film unjustly forgotten, very little mentioned and also now rare to find in traditional television programming as well as (obviously) absent from the dynamics of the illusory breadth of choice of streaming.
