TRENTO. A loan of 6.5 million euros intended for studies for fight cancer through artificial cells capable of identifying the pathology and treating it. This is the amount of Horizon Europe eic pathfinder open resources reserved for two projects carried out by the Department of Cellular, Computational and Integrated Biology (Cibia) dell’University of Trento. Both studies – “Bio-Hhost” and “Omicsens” – are coordinated by Martin Hanczycprofessor of Biochemistry and head of the artificial biology laboratory at Cibio.

The research group, which will be expanded in the coming months, is currently made up of a post-doctoral research fellow Silvia Hollerby the director of the Laboratory of Brain Disorders and Cancer Luca Tiberi and by the head of the biotechnology and nanomedicine laboratory Vito D’agostino. The pourpose of “Bio-Host” – we read in a note – is to build bio-hybrid tissues within which artificial cells interact with natural carcinogenic oneschanging their fate, influencing their function, proliferation and differentiation.

The second project, “Omicsens”will instead focus on creating the first integrated nano-photonic biomolecular sensor. Thanks to a microchip into which the doctor will pour a few drops of blood, a tissue sample or the patient’s extracellular vesicles, the sensor will be able to quickly check if the tumor is presentthus allowing therapy to be started promptly.
