Dealing with AI technologies is still new for many companies. Axel Springer is venturing into unknown territory and starting a collaboration with OpenAI from which both can benefit.

The ChatGPT developer OpenAI and the publishing house Axel Springer want to work together on AI technologies in journalism. “Axel Springer and OpenAI are entering into a global partnership to strengthen independent journalism in the age of artificial intelligence (AI),” Springer announced in Berlin.

“This represents a significant step in both companies’ commitment to using AI to improve content offerings and create new financial opportunities for a sustainable future of journalism,” the statement said. “The partnership also compensates for Axel Springer’s role in contributing to OpenAI’s products.”

Give and take

In the future, ChatGPT users worldwide will receive summaries of selected news content from Axel Springer’s media brands, including “Politico”, “Business Insider” as well as “Bild” and “Welt”, including other paid content. ChatGPT’s responses to user queries should include source information and links to the full articles “to ensure transparency and provide users with further information.” The plans also include using content from Axel Springer’s media brands to advance the training of OpenAI’s Large Language Models.

According to the statement, Axel Springer boss Mathias Döpfner said: “We are pleased to have advanced this global partnership between Axel Springer and OpenAI – the first of its kind. We will explore the possibilities of journalism strengthened by AI – to ensure quality, social relevance and to take the business model for journalism to the next level.”

OpenAI senior manager Brad Lightcap is quoted as saying: “This partnership with Axel Springer will open up new ways for people to access high-quality, timely news content through our AI tools. We are committed to working closely with publishers and creators worldwide to ensure they benefit from advanced AI technology and new revenue models.”
