The National Aquaculture and Fisheries Authority (Aunap) and the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) have signed a joint circular aimed at streamlining and simplifying the procedures for obtaining cultivation permits and health registrations in the aquaculture sector.

This agreement seeks to facilitate the industrialization of artisanal fishermen and allow them access to the global market through the export of products.

The measure aims to reduce times and simplify administrative processes, which will contribute to growth and competitiveness. of Colombian aquaculture producers at the international level. Karen Mejía, director of Aunap, called on artisanal fishermen to consider the aquaculture as a sustainable alternative that, in addition to conserving species in seas and rivers, will strengthen the economy and food security of their families.

Carlos Robles, executive director of Fedeacua, highlighted the importance of this initiative for the formalization of aquaculture production, especially among small-scale aquaculturists. “What follows is an effort at the regional level so that producers can take advantage of the integration between ICA and Aunap,” said Robles, highlighting the need to formalize the sector to maximize its benefits.

For his part, Juan Fernando Roa, general manager of ICA, stressed that this inter-institutional alliance represents a crucial step forward in the modernization of the aquaculture sector. “By unifying and facilitating procedures, we not only optimize the efficiency of the processes, but we also promote the growth and competitiveness of the sector. Aquaculture farmers will be able to enjoy more efficient and faster management, which will allow them to concentrate on sustainable and high-quality production,” added Roa.

According to data from Aunap, national aquaculture production increased from 102,460 tons in 2014 to 202,956 tons in 2023.practically doubling its figures. In addition, last year’s exports reached a value of 134.2 million dollars, consolidating the country as a relevant player in the international aquaculture market.
