The Guatemalan artist Ernesto Boesche Rizo was awarded the prestigious Carlos Mérida Prize 2024 for his outstanding career and valuable contributions to the plastic arts in Guatemala. The award ceremony was held on Wednesday, August 27, in the Banquet Hall of the National Palace of Culture, organized by the Ministry of Culture and Sports (MCD).

The Carlos Mérida Prize, established in 2016, is one of the most important awards given in the field of visual arts in the country. Its objective is to recognize and celebrate the work and career of the most outstanding artists in Guatemala. This year, Ernesto, originally from Salamá, Baja Verapaz, was selected from among the candidates evaluated by shortlists of renowned specialists, who applied strict eligibility criteria to guarantee the quality and merit of the proposals.

The recognition includes a diploma and a monetary prize of Q 50,000, as established in Agreement 1106-2024, which seeks not only to honor the talent of the winner, but also to inspire future generations of artists to continue contributing to the development of art in Guatemala.

A legacy of more than 60 years in the visual arts

Ernesto Boesche Rizo was born in February 1936 in Salamá, Baja Verapaz. At 88 years of age, he has dedicated more than half of his life to painting and teaching the visual arts. His work has left an indelible mark on the Guatemalan art scene, standing out for his technical skill and his commitment to artistic education.

During the award ceremony, Boesche Rizo shared this message of gratitude: “Thank you very much for this award, which for me is one of the highest recognitions in the visual arts of our country, since it bears the name of our greatest exponent of painting, especially modern painting.”

The event was an emotional tribute to Boesche Rizo’s career, attended by family, friends, former students and authorities from the Ministry of Culture and Sports. They all witnessed the recognition of the legacy he has built throughout his life, a legacy that has influenced and will continue to influence generations of Guatemalan artists.
