Ukrainian soldiers are struggling to survive and don’t have time to travel for training.

Michael Dumler, an American photographer, went to the Ukraine to document the war. But when he arrived, he left the chamber and devoted himself to addressing a more pressing need: training ordinary Ukrainians to they knew how to fight

The struggle to create an army of citizen-soldiers against the Russian army has been a defining feature of the conflict in Ukraine.

Western nations allied with Ukraine have been reluctant to back and fund foreign instructors within the country for fear of escalation.

Instead, tens of thousands of soldiers have been sent elsewhere in Europe for training.

But in this opinion video, Dumler argues that the most practical approach to training newly enlisted Ukrainians is within Ukraine’s borders. And the need is enormous.

“Bringing in another couple hundred qualified instructors isn’t going to intensify anything,” Dumler says.

“It’s just going to save ukrainian lives“.
