Puducherry: People are suffering from traffic congestion on Villupuram road as the work of Arumbarthapuram bypass is yet to be started despite the allocation of crores of funds.

A 100 feet wide bypass was planned for 4.5 km from Natesan Nagar flyover junction to Arumbarthapuram at Nuaradichalai, Puducherry.

Last December, Chief Minister Rangasamy laid the foundation stone for the construction of bypass road with the help of HUDCO at a cost of Rs 33.44 crore. But the work has not started even after three months.

Officials of the Public Works Department said:

A lot of sand is needed to improve the base of the asphalt road for a distance of 4.5 km from Natesan Nagar flyover junction on Puducherry-Cuddalore National Highway to Arumbarthapuram junction on Puducherry-Villupuram National Highway.

Due to this the work was not started. Now, the sand problem is over. As the government has given permission to take the required sand, the bypass work will start soon. 7 small bridges are to be constructed on this road for rainwater drainage. Also, 4 key junctions are to be upgraded.

These works will be completed within a year and the bypass will be ready for use. However, we have expedited these works to complete them in 8 months.

When this bypass comes into use, the traffic congestion on the Puducherry-Villupuram road will be solved, he said.
