Hannah B., 30: Dear Mr. Lenné, I have a problem. My boyfriend and I have been a couple for almost a year and are now thinking about moving in together. We are very much in love and get along great on many levels. We have the same sense of humor, love the same movies, generally share a lot of hobbies — and our physical chemistry is just electric. The problem is: Politically, we are very differently polarized. I’m a classic leftist, my boyfriend is a member of the FDP. We avoid political topics as much as we can – otherwise there will be an immediate fight. Do you think a relationship can still work in the long term under these conditions?
Dear Hannah, yes – this is one of those seemingly small problems that most people say at first: “If that’s all…”. But I fear that there may be great explosive power in it. At first, politics seems to be something “out there”, and love is about “in there”. But it’s not that simple here with the separation between inside and outside.
