The theme of the Peat Days is “The peat industry in Latvia: opportunities, trends and use of mining sites after the end of mining”. As part of the event, there will be both a seminar and excursions to peat mining sites and swamps, as well as educational activities in the Riga Zoo.

On September 5, Bellevue Park Hotel Riga, Slokas Street 1, from A seminar will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., where peat industry experts and representatives of ministries will discuss industry policy, opportunities and challenges in the context of climate change, nature protection and regional development. Industry representatives from Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Germany and Ireland will also participate in the seminar to share their experience on peat recultivation and its impact on the environment. The discussions will cover topics about the use of Latvian land for the accumulation of carbon credits, upcoming regulations and their possible impact, the most common types of recultivation and their practical application, as well as the experience stories of various projects.

The language of the seminar is Latvian, with presentations by foreign participants in English, without translation. We invite representatives of ministries, institutions, public organizations, peat industry specialists and other interested parties to join the seminar.

On the other hand, on September 6, as part of the Peat Days, excursions will be held for the first time in the places where peat is mined: Rāķa bog in Vidzeme, Meldziru bog in Kurzeme, Kņava bog in Latgale and Kaigu bog in Zemgale. It will be told about bogs in Latvia, their variety, how many bogs are protected and why, the process and amount of peat extraction, as well as the role of peat in horticulture and forestry. Excursion times: in Rākis, Meldziru and Kniavu marshes – at 10.00–12.00 and 14.00–16.00, in the Kaigu swamp – at 10.00 – 12.00.

We invite seminar participants, employees of state institutions and municipalities, families, students and other interested parties to participate in the excursions in order to learn more about the riches of Latvian bogs and the process of peat extraction.

But on September 7 and 8, there will be hiking in the natural bogs and an educational master class about bogs and peat in the Riga Zoo.
