In the summer months, people sleep with the windows open or buy fans in order to stay awake at night and get a good night’s sleep.
But a much simpler solution is to put on socks – as this helps regulate body temperature even better than an open window.
Lisa Artis from the British Society for Sleep Research said maintaining an optimal body temperature is crucial to getting quality sleep.
“Wearing socks while you sleep can help regulate your body temperature through a process called thermoregulation,” she explained.
Thermoregulation is the body’s ability to maintain its body temperature within a narrow, optimal range, regardless of external temperature changes.
Pagumburis (lot. hypothalamus) is the part of the brain that plays a key role in this process, as it constantly monitors body temperature and triggers physiological responses to conserve or dissipate heat.
“When you wear socks, they warm your feet and cause blood vessels to dilate. This improved circulation facilitates the release of excess body heat. After the heat dissipates, the body temperature drops, which is very important for sleep,” said L. Artis.
Also, according to the expert, it is important to wear the right socks. Socks made of natural fibers such as cotton, bamboo or wool are recommended for their permeability.
“Sleep is so important to our physical and mental health, and small changes can make a big difference in how well we rest,” she added.
