Charith Asalanka has been appointed as the new captain of Sri Lanka in ODIs and T20Is. The selectors announced Aslanka as the captain ahead of the third T20 match against India on Tuesday.
However, Asalanka was made acting captain after Wanindu Hasaranga stepped down as captain after the T20 World Cup. It was under his leadership that the T20 series against India was played at home. After the T20, he will lead Sri Lanka in the ODI series as well.
Kusal was named Sri Lanka’s one-day captain by the selectors last December. Although Sri Lanka played some matches in ODI World Cup under Kusal’s leadership. However, Sri Lanka were doing well under Kusal’s leadership. The skipper was getting runs regularly. The team was also winning. Under his leadership, the Lankans won 6 of the 8 matches they played. Five wins in a row against Afghanistan and Zimbabwe. But lost the series against Bangladesh by 2-1. Cricket pundits are unable to find an explanation as to why Kusal was removed from the post of ODI captain after such a performance under his leadership.
However, Asalanka has been Sri Lanka’s most consistent player in ODIs in recent times. He averaged 43.59 in 52 innings. And the strike rate is 90.
