Foreign ministers from Southeast Asian nations prepared for an informal meeting in Bangkok with Myanmar’s counterpart, while European and regional diplomats held high-level talks addressing ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, Gaza, and Lebanon, diplomatic sources confirmed this week.
ASEAN Foreign Ministers Set for Informal Bangkok Talks on Myanmar
Foreign ministers of the Southeast Asian bloc ASEAN scheduled an informal meeting with their Myanmar counterpart in Bangkok on July 12, according to announcements made by officials in Thailand and Vietnam. The diplomatic gathering follows an election held earlier in the year that brought a new army-backed government to power in Naypyitaw.
The new administration has actively sought the lifting of bans that sidelined its leaders from ASEAN summits following the 2021 military coup and the subsequent civil war. The protracted conflict has devastated swathes of the country, killing over 100,000 people and displacing millions as armed groups battle the military.
Association of Southeast Asian Nations foreign ministers previously agreed at a May summit to hold a virtual meeting with Myanmar’s top diplomat. That decision followed a push by Thailand to foster greater engagement with the new administration. While the 11-member bloc distanced itself from the junta after generals failed to act on the five-point consensus peace plan, many member states have since adjusted their approach. Myanmar’s former junta chief turned president, Min Aung Hlaing, made a state visit to Laos, marking his first trip to an ASEAN member state since taking on his civilian role.
Italian and Turkish Foreign Ministers Evaluate Middle East Crises
Meanwhile, international diplomatic efforts extended to the Middle East, where Italian and Turkish officials reviewed regional security challenges. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani discussed the onset of a new round of negotiations between Lebanon and Israel held in Rome, an initiative Fidan recognized as a significant Italian contribution to peace.
Tajani expressed hope that the dialogue would produce results concretely to consolidate the ceasefire and foster a diplomatic and political agreement, aiming to end Israeli attacks in Lebanon that have caused the deaths of more than four thousand three hundred people. They emphasized the necessity of fully implementing peace agreements to stabilize the Gaza Strip and advance a two-state solution.
Diplomatic Engagements Span Saudi Arabia, Iran, and the United Kingdom
Fidan maintained an active schedule of bilateral discussions across the region, examining regional crises with Saudi counterpart Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. During these talks, Fidan affirmed that Türkiye would continue its efforts to end ongoing conflicts and secure lasting regional stability.
The Turkish foreign minister also conversed with the newly appointed British Foreign Secretary, Ed Miliband, to evaluate developments in the Middle East, Gaza, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Concurrently, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aaty met during a BRICS meeting in India to discuss regional stability, placing particular focus on Iran.
Both sides emphasized the necessity of achieving a peaceful resolution and increasing international efforts to reach a sustainable long-term settlement that accounts for the legitimate interests of regional countries.
Controversy Surrounds British Minister’s Remarks on Detained Doctor
Dr. Abu Safiya, the former director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, was detained by Israeli defense forces in December 2024 and remains in custody without charge after 18 months.
Human rights groups and humanitarian organizations have called for his release, noting that he operated the hospital amidst severe conditions. However, the Israeli foreign ministry strongly condemned the intervention.

Separately, King Abdullah II of Jordan met in Berlin with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz as part of a diplomatic tour focused on the deteriorating humanitarian conditions faced by Palestinians.
