Authorization of ASF vaccines for domestic pigs in Vietnam is expected soon. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has positively assessed the results of a vaccine. This brings approval one step closer.

The world’s first vaccines against ASF, undergoing large-scale testing in Vietnam, are about to be approved. According to news agency Reuters, some international veterinary authorities, including those from the US, report that. According to Reuters, the results of the vaccines are promising. She refers to statements made by Gregorio Torres, head of the scientific department of the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH). “We’ve never been closer to a vaccine that could work,” the scientist told Reuters. “Both vaccines have so far only received approval for commercial trial use in Vietnam. That has now been completed,” said Torres.

Approval

After the USDA positively assessed the results of one of the vaccines, approval is near, reports the German agricultural news agency AgE. The next step is nationwide approval, the first ever for an ASF vaccine. Worldwide sales are also possible. The vaccines have been tested in Vietnam. In that country, this animal disease is a constant threat. Testing in the US was not possible. After all, the virus does not occur in the US.

No problems

USDA researchers have reviewed the results of one of the vaccines, NAVET-ASFVAC, which they co-developed with the Vietnamese company Navetco. No problems were found, a USDA spokesman said. NAVET-ASFVAC is an attenuated live virus vaccine. The second vaccine tested in Vietnam, AVAC ASF LIVE, has also been administered to tens of thousands of pigs on a trial basis. However, this vaccine has not yet been definitively reviewed by the USDA.

Insert not possible

The German interest group of pig farmers thinks that the use of the vaccine in Europe is not yet possible for the time being. “A vaccine for domestic pigs is not a first priority here. Rather, a vaccine for the control of ASF in feral pigs is needed. However, high safety standards and extensive approval procedures must be observed here. It will therefore be some time before a vaccine against ASF is available here. Nevertheless, research activities into an ASF vaccine must also be continued intensively in the EU,” the ISN said in a response.
