The increased activity of the Sangay volcano continues to cause ash to fall in nearby provinces, the Geophysical Institute (IG) of the National Polytechnic School reported on June 16. The institution recorded nearly a thousand minor explosions in the last 24 hours.
For the moment, light ash fall has been confirmed in the towns of Naranjito, in the province of Guayas, and in Chauzán, in Chimborazo. The gas and ash emissions generated columns in the form of clouds that rose to about 2,400 meters above the level of the mountain summit and headed northwest and southwest.
According to satellite images of the cloud captured by the IG, it could generate a slight fall of ash in the province of Cañar as well.
The explosions, which averaged about 49 per hour over the past day, increased compared to the previous day, when the IG counted 946 such events. Although the volcano remained mostly cloudy, periods of incandescence at the crater level could be observed during the night through the monitoring camera system.

The Sangay volcano, 5,230 meters high, is located in the far west of the Amazonian province of Morona Santiago, on an Andean branch that disappears into the jungle.
