The annual wage report for 2020 of the wage commissioner reveals: Ashdod Port workers are in second place among the highest wage earners in the public sector
The person in charge of wages at the Ministry of Finance, Kobi Bar-Natan, published this week the annual wage report for 2020. The report shows that in 2020 the average wage in the public bodies of the State of Israel was about NIS 16,600 gross per month.
This is an increase of about 1.2% in workers’ wages, despite the fact that in the same year a “wage freeze” was set in the public sector due to the outbreak of the corona virus.
The report covers about 400,000 employees in public bodies, who are employed in about 800 budgeted bodies that include: government companies, local government, higher education institutions and statutory corporations.
The report shows that in 2020, the wage expenditures of public bodies increased by about 2% and stood at about NIS 85 billion, even though no significant change was recorded in the number of jobs.
Port workers in Haifa and Ashdod remained the highest paid in public bodies. Haifa Port employees, who are in the process of privatization, earn an average of NIS 34,903, with most of them earning an average salary of NIS 43,000. In the port of Ashdod, the average wage drops slightly to NIS 31,951.
At the Electric Company, the average salary is NIS 29,434. About half of the company’s employees are defined as “high-paid” or “functionaries” (statutory definitions) and earn about NIS 40,000 a month.
At the Hebrew University, 632 “high-wage earners” earned an average of NIS 39,511. To this were added 150 “officials” at the university who withdrew an average salary of NIS 40,141.
At Bar Ilan University, 82 “officials” earned NIS 44,231, at the Weizmann Institute, 23 “seniors” earned NIS 58,311, and at the Open University, 12 “seniors” earned NIS 52,634 per month. 23 senior officials at Yad Vashem earned an average of NIS 39,120.
The wage report reveals that many public sector workers benefit from the “supplement to the minimum wage.” The percentage of employees receiving this benefit was about 43% in 2020, compared to 38% in 2019.
