Barty became the first Australian woman to win the title in 44 years. Earlier in 1978, Chris O’Neill won the Australian Open singles trophy.
Australia defeated Collins of the United States in the final at the Road Lever Arena. This is Barty’s third Grand Slam title since winning the Roland Garros in 2019 and Wimbledon last year. This put an end to the long drought since Chris O’Neill won the title in 1978.
