Chinese President Xi Jinping kicked off the Asian Games in the “Grand Lotus” stadium, which will be at the heart of the event with its 80,000 seats. The Games, which were to be held in 2022, were postponed for a year due to China’s strict anti-Covid policy. More than 12,000 athletes – more than at the Olympics – from some 45 countries and territories in Asia and the Middle East are expected to compete in 40 sports. The Chinese president invited several leaders of allied countries to this occasion, such as Cambodia, Kuwait and Nepal, but also his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad, whom he received on Friday.
