Brand new Mercedes Benz, pick up trucks, jeeps Wrangler and even some Tesla: in the middle of a strong economic crisis in Cuba, High-end cars have begun to steal the spotlight from the American classics of the 1950s and the compacts Lada y Moskvich Soviets.
“Cuba is a country that needs new cars to seek environmental responsibility. We have to do it now,” says the mechanical engineer. Julio Alvarez, 56 years old and owner of a company tourist transport.
Passionate about American classics since he was young, Álvarez has just imported a Chinese SUV Dongfeng for your company Nostalgicardedicated since 2011 to organizing tourist tours around the island.
“What you have to look for is how to get the money out of them and recover the investment,” explains Álvarez, who has had among his clients the family of the American president Barack Obama (2009-2017) and music stars such as Madonna y Beyoncé.
The black SUV seduces in the workshop, where it shares space with 14 Chevrolet brightly colored vintage cars, including a 1938 pickup truck, all looking as if they had just left the factory.
Since he arrived Dongfeng, his wife and partner in Nostalgicar, Nidialys Acosta, “He doesn’t want to get out” of the car, says the engineer jokingly, who plans to import another five modern cars for his business.
The island’s fleet offers a totally unique vintage spectacle with tens of thousands of old cars, including American classics, which are generally used as taxis or for tourism, mixed with the Lada y Moskvich from the Soviet era.
Faced with a severe crisis and food shortages, in a year and a half Cubans have seen mainly people walking through the streets of Havana an avalanche of SUVs, from Asian manufacturers.
