– What does President Tokayev’s speech to Putin mean in Cossack?

– Russia does not know ethics in politics. Takaev took a step towards ethics. He expressed respect for his state and the people he represents. Kazakhstan does not want to be a colony of the Kremlin – that’s what it means.

I remembered how, even in Soviet times, Lithuanian guests in Minsk always started their speech in Belarusian, at least a few phrases, as a sign of respect. And could Putin begin his speech in Cossack? No, of course. It’s actually unnatural. Such is the chasm between true good-neighborliness and the Kremlin’s policy.

– Don’t you think that we, Belarusians, are simply stealing the time of our lives?

– I think that the one who feels that he is the master of his life, only decides for himself: whether he will consider the time of his life stolen or not.

Even in prisons, many strive to live their lives to the fullest and find benefits for themselves: they learn languages, read and write books, make discoveries, make plans. Political prisoners often say that in prison they were saved by the feeling of being an internally free person, because no one can take away internal freedom (and life time).

– Once upon a time, the star of the Hero of the Soviet Union was considered the highest award, but what now?

– Now not everyone will say what the Soviet Union is. Not everyone is ready to list the Heroes of Belarus.

There was a devaluation not so much of awards as of living memory. Behind each star is a certain event, plot, deed – something that can make up your genealogy and that of the whole nation, and only because of this you can feel like a worthy person. In times of memorylessness and familylessness, such awards do not mean anything, as, after all, neither does the person himself, after whom, most often, neither memory nor honor remains.

– How to call a Belarusian patriot, if the words “conscious” and “fighter” are used offensively in propaganda?

– It seems to me that everything is going to the way it happened in other nations, at least neighboring ones. In a neutral sense, they do not say: “Lithuanian patriot” or “conscious Pole” or “Ukrainian fighter”, because such a characteristic is already included in the words: Lithuanian, Pole, Ukrainian. Thus, “Belarusian” ceases to be just a word in the passport. They say: Belarusians went on a peaceful march, Amon is beating Belarusians, Lukashenka is putting Belarusians in prison, and everyone understands that it is not about murderers or drug addicts.

– Why do Orthodox priests bless security forces, but Catholic priests do not?

– I have many examples when Orthodox fathers spoke against violence and on the side of good, but it was always an individual act, for which the priests were repressed. In general, the Orthodox Church in Belarus is a part of the Russian Church, where the blessing of violence traditionally comes from history. In fact, the ROC is part of the state apparatus, and in a totalitarian state it plays the role of propaganda, asserting the innocence of the regime and its leaders.

The Catholic Church is not a state church and has no such aspirations.

– How to deal with democratic structures and individuals, if everyone blames everyone?

– In my opinion, the most suitable method is journalistic: analysis of objective facts confirmed from various sources. If your tasks do not include discrediting a certain person or structure, if you want to promote change and help others, you will never look for a speck in someone else’s eye. Probably, there are many provocateurs working abroad with opposite tasks, who are counting on those who are prone to destruction. There are no objective facts, there is nothing and no one to blame.

– What is more important: politics or culture?

— Soviet tradition: the rubric “Politics” is placed first, and “Culture” – last. Both in the media and in life. Result: lack of political culture. The opposite example was given by Jerzy Gedroyj, who named his legendary political magazine “Culture”.

Politics must be subservient to culture, because it does not enrich the world by itself. It can only eat away at culture: shoot poets, as in the 1930s, push them out of the country, as now. And culture is always an increase (including for politics): a book, a symphony, a film, an architectural masterpiece, the Nobel Prize…
