At the Democratic Party of Korea’s August 18 convention, Lee Jae-myung and Kim Du-kwan, candidates for the party’s leadership, each cited the ‘possibility of being detained in court’ and ‘the experience of losing an election’ as their biggest challenges.

During the party representative debate hosted by JTBC that afternoon, the candidate was asked by the moderator about the “time of greatest ordeal,” and answered, “I have personally experienced many ordeals and have been on the brink of death many times as I have lived in a harsh and difficult environment, but right now is the most difficult time.”

He continued, “(The prosecution) is creating a case that didn’t even exist and making the trial take up a lot of time,” and “In the past, dictatorial regimes would imprison or even kill their political opponents, and when that didn’t work, they would put them under house arrest. Now, I’m stuck in a courtroom.”

The candidate said, “I think this is my destiny,” and “I will overcome this ordeal together with our people and party members and definitely win.” The candidate is currently on trial on charges of false testimony, breach of trust and bribery related to Daejang-dong, Seongnam FC, and Baekhyun-dong, and violation of the Public Official Election Act.

Candidate Kim explained, “I failed in four consecutive elections in Gyeongnam in 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2008,” and “I cried and begged for help in the 2008 general election because I was determined to win. I failed again four times then.”

He said, “I really wanted to give up and wonder if I should continue in the difficult Gyeongnam region, but the reason I got involved in politics in Gyeongnam was because I thought overcoming regionalism was the given task.” He added, “That’s why I was elected as the Gyeongnam governor two years later in my fourth and fifth terms.”

He continued, “Yangsan is challenging the election again, but regionalism is still ongoing, so we are taking on the challenge with a new determination to create a national party.”
