ASL 5: “With adequate hand hygiene, 630 fewer hospital infections per year”

by time news

Every year, in ASL 5, with adequate hand hygiene, there would be over six hundred fewer healthcare-related infections: this is the forecast illustrated in the Hand hygiene business plan 2024/2025 of ASL 5. “Adequate hand hygiene prevents up to 50% of infections contracted during the provision of healthcare – it is read in the document -, including those affecting healthcare workers. Investing in hand hygiene can generate economic savings that are on average 16 times greater than the cost incurred. Globally, out of 100 patients, 7 in developed countries and 15 in developing countries contract at least one healthcare-associated infection in acute hospitals. In our small way, this means that out of 18,000 annual hospital admissions, it is estimated that 1,260 patients contract an ICA and that with adequate hand hygiene we can prevent as many as 630 per year”.
The aforementioned Plancurrently underway, includes a series of actions, in several areas: from improving the monitoring of hydroalcoholic gel consumption to training, from direct observation of adherence to hand hygiene practices to updating operating instructions, to name a few.
Among the indicators that the Plan takes into account, the consumption of the aforementioned hydroalcoholic gel: the 2024 objective is the consumption of over 12 liters per thousand days of ordinary hospitalization.
