World Health Organization Affirms Safety of Aspartame Despite Carcinogen Classification

In a recent announcement, two bodies associated with the World Health Organization (WHO) have declared the sweetener aspartame a “probable carcinogen.” However, the organizations have clarified that the sweetener remains safe when consumed at levels already agreed upon.

The Lyon-based International Agency for Research on Cancer, in its first public announcement regarding the substance, classified aspartame as a “probable carcinogen.” This classification signifies that there is limited evidence that the substance can cause cancer.

However, it is important to note that this classification does not take into account the amount of the substance required to pose a risk to individuals. This assessment is considered by the Geneva-based Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives, in which the WHO and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) are involved.

After conducting its own comprehensive review, the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives stated that it had found no convincing evidence of harm from aspartame. They continued to recommend that the consumption levels of aspartame be kept below 40 milligrams per kilogram of weight per day.

Francesco Branca, head of nutrition at the WHO, addressed the apparent conflict between the two advertisements. He emphasized the importance of considering healthier options, stating, “If consumers are going to decide whether to eat cola with sweeteners or to eat cola with sugar, I think a third option should be considered … which is to drink water instead.”
