What’s happening in Assam? The Assam government took swift action to halt the flow of information online after receiving reports of a “serious law and order situation” from District Magistrates in both Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong on December 23, 2025. The decision aims to preempt potential breaches of peace and prevent the escalation of tensions.
According to a notification from Biswajit Pegu, Commissioner & Secretary to the Government of Assam, Home and Political Department, authorities fear social media and internet platforms could be exploited to disseminate “inflammatory” messages and unfounded rumors. This could further destabilize the already fragile situation.
The order, issued under Section 5(2) of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, and the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017, prohibits Internet/Mobile Data Service of all Mobile Service Providers in the affected districts. The suspension is effective immediately and will remain in place until further notice.
Any individuals found in violation of the order could face prosecution under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya sanhita, 2023, as well as relevant provisions of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885.
The government’s move underscores the increasing reliance on internet shutdowns as a tool for managing unrest and maintaining order in regions facing security challenges. While intended to curb the spread of misinformation, these measures also raise concerns about freedom of expression and access to information.
