The Kremlin said the assassination attempt on US presidential candidate Donald Trump was the result of “the atmosphere created by the American administration.” Representatives of Russian President Vladimir Putin also noted that the head of state does not intend to talk to Trump on the phone.
Kremlin officials added that they do not believe that the current US administration directly planned the assassination attempt on Trump.
Former US President Donald Trump was shot during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The attack left one person dead and two wounded. Trump’s security detail shot and killed the attacker.
The FBI has named the attacker as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, 70 km from Butler. Law enforcement officers found an AR-type semi-automatic rifle at the crime scene. This type of weapon has often been used in mass shootings in the United States since the 2010s.
The Secret Service confirmed that the shooter was dead, one protester was killed and two spectators were injured. The motive for the attack remains unknown.
Trump later claimed on his social media platform, TruthSocial, that he had been hit by a bullet that had pierced the top of his right ear. The Butler District Attorney said that Trump was “grazed” by the bullet. According to CBS News, the former president left the hospital about three hours after the incident.
Trump left the rally under Secret Service protection and with assistance from the Pennsylvania State Police, then arrived at his residence in Bedminster, New Jersey.
