This Tuesday, July 16, 2024, the National Assembly will proceed to swear in Mario Godoy as the new president of the Judicial Council. Henry Kronfle, president of the Legislative Council, included this point on the agenda of Tuesday’s session.
The call, released on July 14, specifies: “Inauguration of lawyer Mario Godoy Naranjo as principal member of the Judicial Council, who will preside over said body.” Session 945 will take place at 5:00 p.m. and will be held in person.
The Assembly played a key role in Godoy’s appointment. On July 10, the Oversight Commission heard from the seven members of the Citizen Participation Council (Cpccs), where the Correísmo assembly members insisted on reconsidering the July 8 vote that initially appointed Dunia Martínez.
This reconsideration was raised on July 10 by Yadira Saltos, a member of the Cpccs.
Conflict in the CPCCS and reported threats
The appointment process was not free of conflict. The CPCCS faced tensions that even reached the Constitutional Court, with debates over the election of the presidency of the Judiciary.
Alejandro Muñoz, secretary general of the National Assembly, reported having received threats and intimidation from the Government to speed up the inauguration of Mario Godoy.
Muñoz said that these threats came from emissaries of the Vice Minister of Government, Esteban Torres.
Mario Godoy’s inauguration as president of the Judicial Council will mark a crucial moment in the administration of justice in the country, with expectations about how his leadership will impact the Judicial Council.
The July 16 session will be closely watched, given the context of controversies and allegations that have surrounded his appointment.
