The Legislative Assembly approved the final report prepared by the deputies of the Special Commission to investigate the bonuses that were paid in the ARENA and FMLN governments, with resources from the population that were assigned to the Reserved Expenses item of the Presidential House.

The findings reveal that past administrations created an illegal mechanism to benefit dozens of former officials from different State institutions with additional payments to their salaries. The money was also received by individuals, legal entities and journalists.

The Legislature agreed to send to the Attorney General’s Office the report that contains all the information collected by the special commission so that, if applicable, it can continue the investigations and initiate criminal actions against those accused of the possible commission of enrichment crimes. illicit, money laundering, bribery and tax evasion.

The investigations indicate that the delivery of these illicit bonuses began in the ARENA governments and the mechanism was perfected by the FMLN administrations. That is to say, the additional payments began to be made in the five-year term of Alfredo Cristiani and were maintained until the administration of Salvador Sánchez Cerén.

The proposal to create a special commission to investigate these cases and carry out an act of justice for the population was presented by the president of the Assembly, Ernesto Castro, a few days into the current legislature.

On August 30 and September 3, 2021, the special commission presented two notices to the Public Ministry against several former officials, including former governor Cristiani, for the possible commission of corruption crimes.
