Assisted Suicide | Can now die with the help of experts; Austria grants assisted suicide

by time news
Austria enacts law allowing assisted suicide with the help of experts. The new law was approved by parliament in December following a court ruling.

Adults who are terminally or chronically ill may choose the path of death through Assisted Suicide, but this practice is strictly regulated.

Juveniles and people with mental illness are not allowed to commit suicide. Adults also need to make sure they are able to make a diagnosis and make their own decisions.

Even after getting approval from two doctors, patients can think about their decision for three months. It can be fatal but can be done in two weeks. If they still wish to proceed after this period, they can obtain the appropriate medication from a pharmacy after giving notice to a lawyer or notary.

Only lawyers and notaries who receive these notices will know the names of pharmacies that sell potentially lethal drugs to prevent abuse of Assisted Suicide.

Last year, a federal court ruled that a complete ban on assisted dying was a violation of the right to self – determination.

Until now, under Austrian law, anyone found guilty of inciting or aiding and abetting to commit suicide could face up to five years in prison. But if you help someone die for no apparent reason, the punishment will be the same as before.

Each case of Assisted Suicide will be evaluated by two doctors, including a palliative care medicine expert. Officials say the palliative care fund will be expanded to find ways to survive without dying.

Assisted suicide is also legal in Austria’s neighbor Switzerland. It has been decriminalized in several European countries, including Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands.
